Abscess Incision and Drainage (I&D)
For an abscess or boil where bacteria is trapped underneath the skin, incision and drainage (I&D) are most often necessary. Antibiotics are often effective against bacteria. However, when antibiotics cannot travel through the pus pocket formed by bacteria, antibiotics cannot destroy it. Therefore, it is often necessary to open up the abscess, reducing the pressure on the site and allowing the abscess or wound to heal.
